The European Commission reviewed regulation (EU) No1152/2011 in December 2016 in the light of scientific developments regarding Echinococcus multilocularis (EM) infection in animals. EFSA was asked to provide a scientific opinion on EM by November 2015. To assist with this review, EFSA funded the project Echinococcus multilocularis infection in animals - EmIA. In order to be able to provide a comprehensive and quantitative assessment of EM infections in animals, the knowledge and data on the epidemiology and risk factors related to this disease were collected in the EU and adjacent countries by means of eight systematic reviews of literature and data. Bibliographic searches identified 10,737 scientific papers, of which 5,421 papers were identified within the eight protocols. Studies regarded as relevant for more than one question were independently analysed in each Systematic review.
