Progetto NAMS4NANO

PROJECTS

NAMS4NANO - Integration of New Approach Methodologies results in chemical risk assessments: Case studies addressing nanoscale considerations

LOT 2 - Risk assessment case studies

LOT 2 (Risk assessment case studies) focuses on five case studies using NAMs for addressing the nanoscale considerations and integrating this information with existing information and knowledge for conducting a risk assessment for consumers.

The case studies are as follows:

  1. Conventional ZnO with a nanoscaled fraction authorized as a nutrient source and ZnO nanoparticles
  2. SiO2 (SAS) authorized as food additive (E551)
  3. Conventional iron oxides with a nanoscaled fraction authorized as food additives (E172)
  4. Nanosilver as food contact material (NM-300K) and conventional silver with a nanoscaled fraction authorized as food additive (E174)
  5. Conventional CuO with a nanoscaled fraction as feed additive and pesticide.

The project coordinator is Andrea Haase of the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR, Germany). ISS participates as a partner and leads case study 1. Besides ISS, the other partners are:

  • French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety (ANSES, France)
  • Sciensano (Belgium)
  • National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM, The Netherlands)
  • Food Safety Research, Wageningen Research Foundation (WFSR, The Netherlands)
  • Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST, Luxembourg).

The Fraunhofer Institute for Toxicology and Experimental Medicine (ITEM, Germany) contributes as subcontractor to specific case studies. The European Commission Joint Research Centre (EC-JRC, Italy) will contribute to the project as external partner.
