The mission of the Statistical Service (STAT) is to improve knowledge of the health status of the population, through research, monitoring and dissemination/communication activities, conducted independently and in collaboration with other ISS units and/or other institutions (national and international).
ACTIVITIES
Specifically, the Statistical Service:
- manages the databases of mortality (source: ISTAT) and hospitalizations (source: Ministry of Health) in Italy;
- carries out statistical-epidemiological analyses of demographic and health data from current flows;
- develops health profiles at the various territorial levels;
- carries out scientific and institutional research activities at national and international level;
- represents ISS in the National Statistical System (SISTAN) taking care of all its obligations; promotes and coordinates the contribution of ISS to the Official Statistics of our country within the National Statistical Program (PSN).
RESEARCH
The Statistical Service is involved in several epidemiological research activities aimed at producing scientific evidence. Most of these investigations concern the elaboration of health profiles of populations exposed to environmental pressure and epidemiological studies on specific pathologies and target populations.
MONITORING
- Collaboration in the activities of the National Statistical System (SISTAN), consolidation of statistics based on current data on public health and communication of evidence.
- Promotion and coordination of ISS contribution to the official Italian Statistics, within the framework of the National Statistical Program (PSN).
DATABASES
STAT manages the Italian mortality database (elaborated from Istat data on causes of death) and the hospitalizations database (elaborated from the Hospital Discharge Forms of the Ministry of Health), updating them annually and producing statistical indicators compliant with international standards. Through these databases, STAT addresses parliamentary questions and provides technical advice for the inquiring institutions (Ministry of Health, Regions, Municipalities), with regard to the health status of citizens residing in certain territories.
STAT AND THE SISTAN
The Statistics Office represents ISS within the Italian National Statistical System (SISTAN), through the following activities:
- Coordination, proposal and implementation of ISS contributions to the National Statistical Program (PSN), which constitutes the corpus of the Official Statistics of our country. Currently, ISS is present with 39 "statistical works", one pertaining directly to the Statistics Office.
- Participation, on behalf of ISS, to the following PSN “Quality Circles”: Environment and Territory and Health, Healthcare and Social Assistance.
- Coordination and compilation on behalf of ISS of some Istat surveys, performed on an annual basis.
